All About the Bernedoodle

Discover why the Bernedoodle has become America's most beloved designer breed.

What Is a Bernedoodle?

A Bernedoodle is the perfect blend of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle — combining the gentle, loyal nature of the Bernese with the intelligence and low-shedding coat of the Poodle. The result? A stunning, affectionate companion that thrives in family settings.

Known for their teddy-bear appearance, Bernedoodles are playful yet calm, devoted yet independent enough to give you space. They come in three sizes and a dazzling array of colors — from classic tricolor to phantom, sable, and merle.

Origin & History

The Bernedoodle was first intentionally bred in 2003 by Sherry Rupke of SwissRidge Kennels in Canada. She recognized the magic that would happen when you crossed two beloved breeds — taking the best traits of both.

Bernese Mountain Dogs have long been cherished for their gentle temperament and striking tricolor coats, while Poodles are celebrated as one of the most intelligent and hypoallergenic breeds in the world. Together, they created something truly extraordinary.

At Royal Paws Companions, we carry this legacy forward with meticulous health testing, champion bloodlines, and over a decade of dedicated breeding expertise right here in the USA.

Temperament & Traits

The four qualities that make Bernedoodles stand apart from every other breed

Family-First Temperament

Bernedoodles are natural family dogs — patient with children, warm with strangers, and deeply loyal to their people. They crave connection and thrive as true members of the household.

Brilliantly Intelligent

Inheriting the Poodle's legendary intellect, Bernedoodles excel at training and love mental stimulation. They pick up commands quickly and enjoy puzzle toys, agility courses, and learning new tricks.

Low-Shedding Coats

Perfect for families with allergies, Bernedoodles typically inherit the Poodle's curly or wavy coat with dramatically reduced shedding. Their beautiful coats come in dozens of stunning color combinations.

Exceptional Hybrid Vigor

The crossbreeding of two distinct breeds produces what scientists call hybrid vigor — resulting in healthier, longer-lived dogs with fewer genetic conditions than either parent breed alone.

Colors & Coat Types

Bernedoodles come in a stunning range of colors and coat textures.

Tricolor

The classic Bernedoodle look — black, white, and rust/tan markings reminiscent of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Highly sought after and absolutely stunning.

Phantom

A base color (often black) with tan/copper points above the eyes, muzzle, chest, and legs. Elegant and rare.

Sable

Golden or brown base with darker (often black) tips that fade as the dog matures. Creates a beautiful, ever-changing coat.

Merle

Mottled patches of color on a lighter base coat — creates a stunning marbled effect. Each merle coat is one-of-a-kind.

Black & White

Clean, high-contrast tuxedo markings. Bold, classic, and always eye-catching. A timeless look.

Chocolate

Rich chocolate brown from nose to tail. Warm, luxurious, and absolutely irresistible. Very popular with families.
